Where Do We Go? (2022 album)

Stephen Schijns (pronounced Skines or Skynz) seems like he’s come out of nowhere with this startling collection of new songs. This extraordinary debut album is the result of a long-simmering musical stew – Stephen, in his early 60s, has been absorbing pop, rock and folk music for decades while cooking up a batch of influence-laden yet wholly original erstwhile hit singles.

This is no concept album; each track stands on its own and the music leaps all over the record store aisles from ragtimey piano romps to chunky guitar riffs to contemplative thought pieces. Throw in some Sixties dancefloor pounders, a surf song, classic power pop, and quirky folk-rock tunes and you’ve got a true box of chocolates. I can’t think of any direct analogies to another artist, but snippets of pop history are scattered throughout. Perhaps a Venn diagram of Tom Petty, Gordon Lightfoot, and The Hoodoo Gurus would help….

The songs are carefully structured, with singalong choruses, middle eights, melodic solos, guitar codas, and easily-understood vocals. Working with skilled studio musicians and producers, Stephen has imbued the guitar-driven proceedings with stellar musical backing to create the dynamic tension and resolution of classic pop-rock singles. While many of the tunes are furiously upbeat and cheery, some quieter interventions balance the sonic palette. Stephen’s comfortable singing is calm, warm, or urgent as needed.

The lyrics are interesting and thoughtful throughout, even on the lighthearted 60s-style tunes. Stephen has a slightly detached observational perspective that more often than not aims for an approachable universal reaction, rather than that of a deeply personal “singer-songwriter”. He sings about “a man” rather than “I”. Even in quirky songs like “The Yukon Doesn’t Care”, some solid philosophical and technical points get made. The lyrical cleverness of “What Do I Know About Love” and seriousness of “What? Why?” are played against buoyant musical ideas that almost make you forget what you’re humming along to. And the gorgeous “Elegy” brings proceedings to a close with a near-epic treatment of a man looking back on the errors and could-have-beens of his long life.

Analogous, perhaps: Sam Roberts, Guided by Voices, Yardbirds, Tom Petty, Gordon Lightfoot, Hoodoo Gurus, Byrds, REM, Paul Kelly

Categories: folk-rock, 60s pop, garage rock, power pop, guitar rock, indie rock (plus one surf rock song!)

Hard Edged World
“Hard Edged World” is a lament of sorts, commenting on the way that the crushing forces of commerce and conformity and fear have nearly obliterated the human qualities of wonder, belief, and acceptance of the unknown. The song uses the examples of Easter, Hallowe’en, and Christmas to make its point. The song suggests easing back on consumerism and rediscovering a more open and natural view of the world – softer and less harsh.

The Yukon Doesn’t Care
Written on a rafting expedition down the Alsek River in 2014, this catchy alt-folk-rock song explores the dichotomy of the North, whereby a visitor or resident can have a great personal experience and be in awe of the magnificent natural surroundings, while the land itself is timeless and everlasting. Our presence is but a tiny blip in the Yukon’s environment and geologic time span. The Yukon will be there long after we pass through, so it is indifferent to our presence. Meanwhile the verses celebrate the experience of a rafting trip down one of the mighty rivers of the north. The middle eight offers a relaxed contemplative view of the rafting life.

“I Know A Man” is a driving, rhythmic, tuneful outing riding on a fluid bass line and propulsive drumming. The verses observe the actions of archetypical men with empathy, not judgement. There are several non-recorded verses available.

You, Me, Love
Written for my wife on her birthday, the song is universal in the way it celebrates the joys and accomplishments of many years together, founded on a foundation of love and respect, and how an unconditional love is freeing, rather than constraining or limiting. Musically, the arrangement hearkens back (in a good way) to the orchestrated pop of the late 60s.

Elegy
This six-part rock “epic” takes a clear-eyed and unsentimental look back at a man’s life, his regrets, his missed opportunities, and the toll that time has taken on his enthusiasm. With tempo changes from contemplative acoustic to driving rock moods, brilliant guitar work, controlled vocals, and a descending note motif running through the song, Elegy rewards repeat listening. A tasteful guitar solo at the end of the song provides space for the listener to contemplate the message of Elegy. It is contemporary yet timeless.

I’m Still Playing (2026 album)

Steve's second album (tentatively titled "I'm Still Playing") will be released in 2026. It is a compilation of all the singles issued since "Where Do We Go?" came out at the end of 2022. Once again, the album provides a tour of multiple pop/rock genres, from surf to punk, folk to orchestrated pop, 60s garage to fast-paced rock. Steve's lyrics range from fun to profound according to the song's needs.

Steve continues to work with impressive producer / musician Andrew Smith at Andrew's Lake Studios setup in Kelowna, BC, Canada. Andrew and Steve have called in top-notch studio musicians (including drummer Zachari Smith, working out of Halifax) to contribute distinct sounds to some of the tracks. But the core of each song remains guitar-driven, melodic, hook-laden, and classically structured.

The list of singles below is simply chronological, and not yet in the order in which they will appear on the album. Additional songs are "in the works" and are not shown here. This will be updated upon release of the album.

Carry On (The Way It Has To Be)
Continuing with my exploration of pop/rock styles, up comes this old-school country-rock single. We hear references to Buffalo Springfield (“Go And Say Goodbye”), The Eagles (“Take It Easy”), Poco (“Grand Junction”), and even Every Mothers’ Son (!) (“You May Be Right”) with the chipper twangy guitar-driven tune. It’s a clever lyrical trip too, with the singer brushing off the departure of his lover (“I don’t mind, carry on”) as a way of covering up his confusion and angst about what he could have done or whether the departure was his fault. No matter, it’s out of his hands now; carry on!

I’m Still Playing

There are millions of love songs, but far fewer about old age and dementia…for everyone who is, has, or will be dealing with an aging parent, or even if you’re going through the process yourself, you know the frustration, the mind shutting down, the one-step-forward-two-steps-back process that can go on for years. Yet there still rages within the need to set things right, to live with enthusiasm, and to run the race right to the end. “Don’t be standing over me praying / Nothing matters now, just saying”

The music review website Poprock Record (Songs With A Hook) has commented (favourably!) on several of my releases, and my tunes have been featured on a couple of the site’s annual “Should Be Hit Singles” Top 50 lists: “Carry On (The Way It Has To Be)” was #23 in 2024, and “I Met Her Yesterday” made #18 in 2022. Back in the 1980s I had my own show on CKCU-FM in Ottawa, Canada (many of those programs are archived under the Sixties tab) but when I became a recording artist, I had the opportunity to return “home” for an interview and some spins on the morning show, Special Blend, with host tic. The show was live-to-air on Oct 11, 2023; I was featured on Hour 2. Here is the link: CKCU: # 979. Stephen Schijns – Wednesday Special Blend – 2023-10-11
